In the course of my research, I had read it again and again somewhere - short periods of intense stress on the body stimulate various hormones. And hormones - these are the little bosses of our body who are in control of the speed of ageing.

Then I read an interesting article entitled "Could this be the easiest way to balance hormones?" (see below) and then I wanted to know. People over the age of 40 are advised to balance their hormones with a short burst of intense exercise. The instructions are: 30 seconds of full exertion (jumping, full throttle cycling etc.), 1 minute break. The whole thing is repeated 2-3 times.

When I was running, I thought about the article. I was very sceptical, because I know very complicated ways to stabilise hormone levels and this seemed far too simple to have any effect. But then I thought, I'm running at such a leisurely pace, I'll just incorporate such an intensive short workout now. So towards the end of my lap, I ran a 30-second sprint, then ran for 1 minute at a leisurely pace, and again and again. What happened next blew me away for a short time. Even while stretching, I thought my body felt so warm and supple. Within half an hour, I had a rush of happy hormones that lasted until the evening. How awesome is that!, I thought - and understandably wanted that again a few days later.

Unfortunately, that kind of high never came. Instead, my strength and stamina, my general fitness and well-being increased very noticeably in a very short period of time. This intensive short training programme must give the body a strong boost that you can clearly feel. I wouldn't want to miss this little interlude in my running routine!
